Marino Ballena National Park offers two distinct whale watching seasons each year. Humpback whales migrate from both hemispheres to breed in these warm waters. This creates an eight-month window for boat tours.

What is the best time to visit Marino Ballena National Park for whales?

The absolute best times are August to October and January to March.

The Southern Hemisphere humpback whale migration peaks from August to October. The Northern Hemisphere humpback whale migration happens from December to April. Both groups come to Costa Rica to breed and calve.

What is the weather like during the whale seasons?

The Southern migration overlaps with Costa Rica's green season, bringing frequent rain.

From May to November, expect afternoon showers. If you visit during the August to October whale peak, pack a light rain jacket. The Northern migration (December to April) falls during the drier months, offering sunnier boat tours.

What time of day is best for a boat tour?

Morning boat tours are usually the best choice.

The ocean is typically much calmer in the early morning. Booking a morning excursion from the Uvita Tour Launch Area gives you a smoother ride. It also lowers the chance of heavy rain interrupting your trip during the green season.

When can you walk the Whale's Tail?

You can only walk the sandbar during a 4 to 6-hour window around low tide.

The Whale's Tail (tombolo) connects to the shore at low tide. Always check daily tide charts before your visit. If you want to walk the 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) of coastline, time your park entry accordingly.

Yes, dolphins and sea turtles live in the park throughout the year.

Even if you visit between the whale migration peaks, the park's waters host spotted dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, sea turtles, and manta rays. You might also spot nesting sea turtles in the Ballena and Piñuela sectors.
